Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) rose in popularity over the past two years as a way to buy and sell digital art and collectable items. Similarly, in-game purchases in video games have also experienced a boom period which can be likened to NFTs as well.

Video games developers have shown their interest in using NFT tech as a building block for the future. This includes Electronic Arts and its sports game division as they see NFTs as an important part of the industry.

Chief executive Andrew Wilson told investors that he believes FIFA players want to see NFTs in the franchise. He said, ‘Players want more modalities at play inside the game, which go beyond just straight 11-on-11 football. They want more digital experiences outside the game – esports, NFTs, broader sports consumption and they want us to move really quickly’.

Some people might be asking ‘how can you earn money with NFTs?’ but this has already been proven given that so many people have earned money by using this platform.

While the idea might be too fast, NFTs rapid rise in popularity proves that people are willing to invest in these products. While there are many critics and detractors, it will be challenging to oppose the project especially since most NFT fans will show solid support.

NFTs can be put into games tastefully

NFTs has breached the gaming industry as of late and it has become one of the hottest topics. If you aren’t convinced that some people want this to happen. Of course, the jury is still out about how this will be implemented in games.

Gamers want the introduction of these to their favourite titles to be tasteful. It will be a disservice if these NFTs are just immediately immersed in the game. That can make the game unbalanced for some people because they don’t want this to affect the overall gameplay.

Some publishers and developers have a good idea of using these NFTs as in-game cosmetics. This way, they can be used in games while not affecting how the game is played. They should not be used to become a pay-to-win mechanic because it will be rough to see people struggling with NFTs in games that affect the gameplay itself.

Publishers believe in its upside

EA is not the only company that has shown interest in NFTs because Japanese giant Square Enix has also thrown their hat into the ring. That is huge for gaming because Japanese companies are seen as traditional but if SE is open for the chance, the majority of the industry’s top companies can follow.

SE President Yosuke Matsuda talked about the possibility of NFTs in their games and how they can satisfy some crowds.

He said, ‘I realize that some people who “play to have fun” and who currently form the majority of players have voiced their reservations toward these new trends, and understandably so. However, I believe that there will be a certain number of people whose motivation is to “play to contribute”’.

That is a good point that can happen especially when people keep asking ‘how can you earn money with NFTs?’ and it looks like publishers have found a way by selling them in their games.
