We all know that healthy food is good for you and should be consumed often. Unfortunately there are some misconceptions about healthy eating and certain food groups. Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your favorite foods or abstain from meals that make life worth living. Healthy eating simply means making a few tweaks here and there to limit the amount of calories from fat, cholesterol, sodium, etcetera. 

Today we will be discussing five common stereotypes when it comes to healthy food:

1) All fruit and vegetables are healthy

Wrong! The first step towards cooking a delicious fruity dessert – banana pudding anyone? – is by cutting up some fresh bananas into discs and then adding them into the pudding mixture. But beware; those seemingly innocent discs are packed with sugar, which is bad for your health.

If you love that ripe sweet taste of strawberry, then you’re in luck! Strawberries are also packed with vitamin C and potassium. However, strawberries are susceptible to mold and can be poisonous if consumed in large amounts or under the wrong conditions. A good rule of thumb is to wash strawberries before consuming them and always choose the red ones (with green tops) over the white ones (with yellow tops).

Many vegetables have a high glycemic index – meaning they break down quickly and release a large amount of glucose in the blood – and that’s not a good thing. Foods high in glycemia have been linked to an increased risk of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. A simple foolproof way to reduce your glycemic index is by making fruit smoothies with your favorite fruits.

2) Eating meat is unhealthy

Not true! If you happen to be a vegetarian, there is no reason for you to be upset by this statement. Meat is perfectly healthy for vegetarians – it has iron, zinc and selenium, which are all important building blocks of the human body. Furthermore, some meats are even used to prepare your favorite non-meat dishes such as chicken soup (try it out! You won’t be disappointed) and other tasty meals. 

Meat is particularly healthy when it comes from organic, grass-fed sources. This way you are eating the very best that nature has to offer. Organic foods are usually higher in nutritional value and low in pesticides, GMOs and hormones.

3) Coconut oil is healthy

Wrong! While coconut oil may taste delicious when frying something in it, don’t let that distract you from the fact that coconut oil has some pretty high levels of saturated fat. One tablespoon a day can easily increase your cholesterol count by more than 20 points so avoid doing this at all costs. Instead, try out olive oil which is said to be good for the skin, heart and brain. A small amount of olive oil can also be used to season your food instead of butter or salt.

4) Popcorn is healthy

Not true! Even though popcorn might seem healthy with its whole grain and high fiber content, air-popped popcorn (the healthy kind) is nothing but empty calories. The air-popped kind has almost as many calories as a glazed donut – that’s 467 calories per 100 grams! To make matters worse, those 100 grams contain almost no vitamins or minerals either. If you would like to have popcorn, then make sure you do it the right way by popping your own and adding just a little bit of butter on it.

5) Low-fat foods are healthy

Not true! Even though low-fat versions of food may seem healthier than the original, this isn’t always the case. For example, low-fat foods often contain more sugar in place of fat because sugar is zero in fat and one hundred percent pure calories (hence why it has served as an energy source for so many years). Therefore, trying to go for a diet that’s high in fiber but low in fat is not recommended. If you decide to stick with a diet high in fiber, then eat the original version of a food.
