The Future Of HIERARCHY

The hierarchy is an invention that has helped humans organize and understand certain things like tertiary colors definition. The idea was probably started by the ancient Mesopotamians, who needed to figure out which god should receive a certain offering or be in charge of a certain ceremony. Hierarchy allows for organizations to have some sort of succession plan and for people to know who is in charge at any point in time.

But what if there were no hierarchy? Well, that would lead to chaos! Imagine if you had no idea how your job functioned – you wouldn’t be able to do your tasks well because they might not align with what other people are doing under you.

1. We would have no way to represent a true leader. Since no one would be above anyone else, there would be no way to figure out who is really running the show. We’d need someone to be in charge, or else things would fall apart!

2. People wouldn’t know what job they were supposed to do. Without hierarchy, there can be no succession plans – and that means people won’t know what job they are supposed to do in your organization until others tell them! This can lead to redundancies and people just not getting any work done because they are unsure of what they should be doing at all times.

3. There would be no consistent methods of doing certain tasks. Doing certain things like building a product or maintaining specific machinery can be very difficult if no one knows how to do it. To create a consistent process, you need to have someone who is in charge of making sure that the process happens.

But that sounds like hierarchy leads to rigidity!

That’s absolutely correct – but it is a kind of rigidity that allows for consistency and structure in an organization. There are always going to be instances where people don’t agree with the way things are done, so having some sort of hierarchy allows those people to know who to go above in order to get their point across. Without that, everything would be chaos – and then you can’t get anything done!

4. We would have lots of creativity but no real progress. You see, hierarchy is where you determine which people should be doing certain things in an organization – so those ideas get passed down the hierarchy then the work gets done!

But think about the kind of creativity that comes from being open to new ideas? Wouldn’t having no structure allow for creativity to flourish?

I think so – but I think there is a difference between allowing creative ideas to flow and coming up with something new on your own. World-changing innovations are usually a result of such “creative freedom” rather than coming up with something on your own. That kind of breakthrough is extremely difficult without some sort of guidance – by someone who is in charge of making sure that the work gets done.

So hierarchy isn’t all that bad? There are a lot of things we need to understand before we can really do our jobs, right?

You’re right! There are reasons why organizations have hierarchies and they are beneficial to us in many ways. Hierarchy allows for consistency and organization, which creates structure for us to do our job functions well.

5. But wouldn’t fear of being put in the “wrong” spot prevent good work from being done?

There are benefits and drawbacks to hierarchy. For example, a lot of people would agree that a company hierarchy could be a major part of the reason why we have so many problems with projects not getting done on time.

It is also true that if you do not have someone in charge to guide the work, you are likely going to get confused ideas and bad work! That is why hierarchies are usually structured – so there is one person who knows how everything gets done.

6. In the absence of hierarchy or a clear chain of command, what could help to improve things?

I believe that we should have clear communication from the top down. People know who is in charge so if they are confused about what to do, they can just ask and get answers from the top!

7. Given all this information, is there any way for even more people to be able to “uprise” and take charge?

Yes! If you are willing to accept a leadership role in your organization, you can start putting plans into place – just make sure that whoever is willing to take those actions understands that there will be a system in place so people can rely upon them.

8. What do you think is the best way to handle people who are a little bit rebellious?

I think that you need to start with a hierarchy that is as flat as possible. There should be very few barriers for people, which allows for them to feel included and not too restricted in their work. That way, they can feel like they are part of something and not just someone who does stuff without feeling like they have a say in how things get done.
